The NICE MS Guideline also recommends that steroids should be started as early as possible and within 14 days of the onset of relapse symptoms. Methylprednisolone is usually supplied as tablets containing 100mg of the medicine. You will need to take five tablets a day for five days in a row.

  • They are commonly prescribed for the control of pain, especially joint pain and can be very effective.
  • Take your steroids exactly as your health professional has told you.
  • People are often concerned about the possibility of other steroid-related side effects such as weight gain.
  • They’re often prescribed to people with a history of blood clots or an increased risk of developing them.
  • All of these steroid-induced side-effects are reversible and diminish when the dose of steroid is decreased or stopped.

If this is the case, you should be
under the care of a specialist. It’s understandable that people worry about side effects of using steroids. Your doctor may prescribe steroid inhalers for COPD if your symptoms get worse, or if you’ve been having a lot of flare-ups.

The risk of thinning bones and broken bones is much higher if you take high-dose steroids for more than three months. And because the steroid medicine in your preventer inhaler is breathed in(inhaled), it goes straight down into your airways. Your steroid preventer inhaler is unlikely to cause side effects, especially if you’re using your inhaler correctly.

Mood and behaviour changes

If taken orally, steroids can show up in a urine test for up to 14 days. Anabolic steroids are available as tablets or as a liquid for injection. This is because when you’re on high doses of steroids your body may stop producing enough of its own natural steroids to help illness or injury. This means that doctors will need to give you extra corticosteroids. But if you’re taking high doses for a long time, you may be at risk of some of the same side effects as steroid tablets.

Side-effects and risks

You may need an ultrasound scan to find where the inflammation is, so the steroid can be injected into a precise spot and have maximum benefit. An ultrasound scan uses high-frequency sound waves to create an image of part of the inside of a body. They will be carried out by a healthcare professional in a hospital, clinic or doctors’ surgery. Current guidelines say that some steroid tablets, including prednisolone, can be taken during pregnancy.

These are injections that contain a small amount of a living bacteria or virus that has been made weaker in the laboratory. Let your child’s health team know as soon as there has been contact. Skin thinning is an uncommon, temporary side-effect of steroids.

What are the side-effects of steroids?

Steroids can affect the eyes, for example by making glaucoma worse or causing cataracts. They can also cause a problem with your eyes known as serous chorioretinopathy (see-russ core-ee-oh-ret-in-op-ath-ee), which happens when fluid collects in part of the eye. If you notice any changes in your eyesight, such as your vision becoming blurry, be sure to let your doctor know as soon as possible.
